Online Police Reporting Frequently Asked Questions

Question What do I do if the online incident reporting is not right for me?
Answer If your incident is an emergency, call 911. If this is not an emergency call Capitol Police at 775-687-5030 for incidents relating to State of Nevada buildings, offices or personnel or your local law enforcement agency for all other cases.

Question What if this happened away from state property? Can I file a report using this online reporting system?
Answer No, if a crime took place away from a State of Nevada property, contact the police or sheriff’s office for that jurisdiction.

Question What if this happened on a state freeway?
Answer Capitol Police does not handle traffic accidents or criminal acts which occurred on state roads or freeways. Reports of this nature will be handled by the Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Division or your local law enforcement agency.

Question What is a “state property”
Answer The Capitol Police Division is a division of the Nevada Department of Public Safety; authorized as a law enforcement agency under NRS 331.140 and NRS 480.140. Specific to the definition of state property, NRS Chapter 331 discusses the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Work to include, “…all state buildings, grounds and properties not otherwise provided for by law…” For online reporting purposes, state property is essentially leased or owned property administered by the Executive Branch of government not to include many boards, the System of Higher Education, or Department of Transportation. Question As a state employee, am I required to report workplace violence?
Answer Yes! The State of Nevada Workplace Violence Prevention Policy states that an employee must report an incident or act of workplace violence immediately.

Workplace violence is defined as, “Violence, threats, harassment, intimidation and other acts of aggression and disruptive behavior in the workplace…Acts of aggression can include oral or written statements, gestures, or expressions that communicate a direct or indirect threat of physical or mental harm or, indirect acts such as damage to personal property”. Workplace violence can involve current and former employees, from personal relationship such as a romantic partner, spouse, ex-spouse, or relative as well as clients, customers and random acts by individuals or groups.

If there is an imminent threat or an emergency, call 911! Otherwise, to report a workplace violence incident notify a supervisor immediately. The Risk Management Division is responsible for notifying Capitol Police or the local law enforcement agency.

This online system allows for a direct portal of reporting workplace violence including criminal acts; however, is not a substitute for internal reporting. You must follow your own department policy regarding workplace violence reporting.

Question Are reports confidential?
Answer All reports made through this system are official police reports and subject to law and policy regarding confidentiality. Many types of reports are open to public inspection and dissemination.

Question What if I’m not sure if this incident occurred on or around state property or within the jurisdiction of the Capitol Police Division?
Answer If you have made it this far and are still unsure, file the report with this online system! All reports are reviewed and if this is not the right place to report the incident it will be forwarded to the right agency.
