“Ah, September! You are the doorway to the season that awakens my soul... but I must confess that I love you only because you are a prelude to my beloved October.” – Peggy Toney Horton

As the Nevada summer comes to a close and autumn begins, the Nevada Public Employees’ Deferred Compensation Program (NDC) prepares for exciting changes and new educational opportunities to assist participants and employees with their journey to and through retirement.

NDC receives Leadership in Excellence Award from NAGDCA

The NDC Program received yet another Leadership in Excellence Award from the National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators (NAGDCA) in recognition of our multi-year development and execution of the NDC Cybersecurity Policy. The policy was among the first of its kind for government plan sponsors and reflects the collaboration of the Nevada Deferred Compensation Committee & Administrative Staff, Chief Information Officer’s Office (OCIO), State Risk Management, and our contracted partners, Voya and Hyas Group Consultants, to establish minimum requirements and benchmarks while sustaining the Governor’s 3-year plan policy matrix. NDC Administrative Staff and Committee members attended the NAGDCA Annual Conference in Phoenix, where we engaged in important training opportunities and represented the State by accepting the Leadership Award. Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility and, in this case, presented a perfect example of partnership to help streamline service delivery and important operational efficiencies.

Plan for the future during Nevada Saves Month

Every October, the NDC Program presents Nevada Saves Month in conjunction with and recognition of National Retirement Security Month (NRSM). This year, we invite all employees to take some time to think about their retirement future. The NDC Program can help put that future in perspective with 5 important things you can do now and throughout the year to help achieve your future financial goals and improve your overall financial wellness.

To celebrate Nevada Saves Month, all State, NSHE, or local Political Subdivision employees and/or existing Program participants who enroll in the NDC Program, increase their NDC contributions, or register their nevada.beready2retire.com account online in October will be entered to win a special Nevada Deferred Compensation prize!

Below, The Deferred Word will go into more detail about Nevada Saves Month, including dates, times, and topics for this year’s series of live webinars presented to all employees and their families. We hope these sessions will help improve your overall financial security now and into retirement. Mark your calendars for the week of October 21st and we look forward to seeing you there.

Exciting NDC news from Governor Lombardo

We are pleased to announce that Governor Lombardo has re-appointed Ms. Samantha Jayme from the DHHS-ADS Division to continue her service on the NDC Committee for an additional 4-year term. Samantha continues to bring great insight and perspective from the newest generation of public service employees, and we look forward to her continued participation.

In closing, all of us here at NDC first hope you take something away from Nevada Saves Month to get you closer to a secure financial future, followed by a safe and enjoyable holiday season for you and your family.

We love seeing your pet photos. Submit yours today!

Thank you to all of The Deferred Word readers who submitted a pet photo last quarter. Some of them are featured in this issue. More will be shared in future editions. We want yours too! Got a favorite photo of your four-legged friend or “fur baby?” Email your pet photo to deferredcomp@defcomp.nv.gov with the subject line “Deferred Word Pet Photo Contest” and include your pet’s name. We look forward to highlighting more participant pets throughout 2024.

NEVADA SAVES MONTH ^ top of page

October is Nevada Saves Month

The NDC Program and our contracted recordkeeper, Voya®, celebrate Nevada Saves Month every October to help State employees clear their path to financial confidence and a more fulfilling life. This year, you’ll learn 5 important ways that you can help achieve your future financial goals.

How many of these things do you currently do with your NDC account? The more engaged you are with your account, the more informed you are about your retirement progress and able to make adjustments as needed to complete the journey to retirement on your terms.

  1. See how much you can afford to save each paycheck. Have you ever wondered how much money you will need to retire or how much can you afford to save from each paycheck? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, My Retirement Overview® can help.

  2. Allocate your current assets and future contributions. How is your NDC account balance invested? How will future contributions to your NDC account be invested? You are responsible for directing and managing the investment of your contributions, so resources like the NDC Investment Options Overview are available to help you invest your way.

  3. Visit nevada.beready2retire.com. Did you know that unregistered online accounts are more at risk to be compromised by fraudsters than registered accounts? While all online financial accounts are important, let’s start by focusing on your NDC account. Visit nevada.beready2retire.com and log in regularly to review your recent account activity.

  4. Estimate your retirement progress. Do you know how your NDC account balance translates to monthly income? myOrangeMoney® can help you estimate your progress toward creating sustained income throughout retirement. Whether retirement is 5 years or 40 years away, myOrangeMoney helps to estimate where you stand on the journey to retirement and what you can do to improve your outlook. Visit nevada.beready2retire.com to start.

  5. Simplify your financial life. Voya can help you roll retirement accounts from former employers into your NDC account to simplify your retirement planning process. Consolidating accounts can help you stay on top of your finances by investing consistently, paying the same fees, and tracking your retirement progress in one place. Call (866) 865-2660 or email ACT@voya.com to learn about your options to help simplify your financial life.

How many of these 5 important ways have you not explored? This Nevada Saves Month, be intentional with your retirement planning and take the next best step to achieve your future financial goals. For questions about any of these tips, call the NDC Administrative Office at (775) 684-3398 or attend any of the Nevada Saves Month webinars featured in the next article. We’d love to help.

Retirement Consultants are registered representatives of and offer securities through Voya Financial Advisors, Inc. (member SIPC).

Please carefully consider the benefits of existing and potentially new retirement accounts and any differences in features. Please note that assets rolled over from other non-457 plans (such as 401(a)/401(k), 403(b), a traditional IRA) may remain subject to the IRS 10% premature distribution penalty tax.

Be intentional.
Save for what’s next.

ACTIVELY PARTICIPATING ^ top of page

October is also Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
Learn how to protect your data online.

Despite the advancement of digital tools, your personal information online is still at risk. Hackers continue to find new ways to compromise security. It’s up to you to be your own first line of defense when it comes to protecting yourself against growing cyber risks.

Here are Voya’s Top 10 Fraud Prevention Tips to help keep your
information safe and secure.

  1. Update your software and operating systems. Outdated systems make your personal information and accounts vulnerable.
  2. Protect your systems with anti-virus software. Anti-virus software can help prevent your exposure to new threats.
  3. Establish unique, long and complex passwords. Passwords that are easily guessed, reused across multiple accounts, or shared, potentially put you at risk.
  4. Never share your account passwords, PIN, one-time passcode, Social Security number or any other personal information. Sharing personal information increases the risk of fraud.
  5. Protect and secure your login information. Do not store login information on your computer or leave passwords written in places that can be accessed by others.
  6. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA), preferably to a mobile device. While email is allowed, MFA with a mobile device is safer.
  7. Be cautious of suspicious emails. Fraudsters are adept at imitating legitimate emails. Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments from unfamiliar sources.
  8. Be alert to fraudulent phone calls. If you don’t recognize the number, think twice about picking up. Scammers can mimic local area codes to get you to answer.
  9. Be aware of changes to your normal mail delivery activity. Fraudsters are known to submit a change of address or place a hold on mail delivery, so you do not see important communications.
  10. Immediately call the Plan Information Line at (855) GO-RET-NV (467-3868) if you identify suspicious activity in your NDC account. The faster you act, the faster we can mitigate the effects of fraud.

Other tips

  • Check your Social Security Earnings and Benefits statement every year to make sure that no one else is using your Social Security number for employment. You can obtain your statement at ssa.gov/myaccount/statement.html.
  • Securely destroy documents containing personal information and be very cautious about posting personal details on social media or the internet. Criminals can use this information to guess your security question answers or knowledge-based authentication quiz responses.
  • Never carry your Social Security card, financial institution passwords or other sensitive information in your wallet.

These are just some of the ways to help protect your accounts and identity. For more tips and insights, visit voya.com/articles/protecting-your-accounts.

Register your
NDC account online

It’s never been easier to register your NDC account for online access. Visit nevada.beready2retire.com, click Register Now, and provide some identification information to receive a code by text or email that you can immediately use to create an account username and password.
